My husband and I love reading kids Halloween books to our kids in September and October! This list has all of our favorite ones on it. These are fun to read to kids of each grade, babies, and toddlers.
There are books that are cute, unique, funny, silly, and slightly spooky.
Your kids are sure to love doing read aloud with these Halloween stories.
Kids Halloween Book #1 – Little Blue Truck’s Halloween
We love the original Little Blue Truck book, so this Halloween one just had to be added to our fall library. It’s my favorite Halloween books for children!
I love all the animals in it and how each one has a Halloween costume. It’s written by Alice Schertle. Shop the original Little Blue Truck here.
2. Bonaparte Falls Apart
This is one of our family’s newer Halloween books, but it came out in 2017. It has a really cute and fun story about a boy named Bonaparte.
His bones keep falling off and he’s embarrassed, so he enlists all of his friends to help solve the problem. It’s written by Margery Cuyler and Will Terry.

3. No Such Thing
This is one of the more trendy Halloween books kids love right now. I love the colors used in it. The story is about a girl named Georgia who notices that things have been moving around.
Find the little ghost on each page with your kids to make reading it extra fun! It is written by Ella Bailey. It’s for children ages 3-7 years old.
4. It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a classic to read and watch in October. It is written by Kara McMahon who adapted it from Charles M. Schulz, and is illustrated by Scott Jeralds.
Charlie Brown and his friends go trick or treating while Linus waits in the pumpkin patch all night for the Great Pumpkin.
5. Spooky Pookie
Spooky Pookie is a Halloween board book written by Sandra Boynton. This book is about a pig who tries on lots of Halloween costumes trying to decide what to dress up as for Halloween.
This is a great Halloween book for babies and toddlers.
6. Ten Timid Ghosts
This book is written and illustrated by Jennifer O’Connell. It’s perfect for beginner readers and is for kids ages 2-5 years old. It is full of ghosts and is a counting book.

7. The Scariest Book Ever
This silly story is not really a scary one despite how the name makes it sound. Bob Shea is the author and illustrator. It’s best for kids ages 3-6 years old.
8. Leo A Ghost Story
The author of this book is Mac Barnett and the illustrator is Christian Robinson. This is a cute little story about friendship. Leo is a ghost and is misunderstood by most people.
9. At The Old Haunted House
Lots of different creatures live in this house including monsters, goblins, and black cats. It was written by Helen Ketteman and illustrated by Nate Wragg.
10. How To Make Friends With A Ghost
I love the colors and cute illustrations in this book. It’s about a girl who teaches you how to become friends with a ghost and how to take care of them. If you do it right, your ghost friend will stay with you for life and beyond.
It has a spooky fun ending that is not too scary for little ones. It was written by Rebecca Green and is intended for ages 3-8 years old.
11. Gustavo, The Shy Ghost
I love the pink cover of this book! It is written and illustrated by Flavia Z. Drago. It’s about a ghost named Gustavo who is very shy and has a hard time making friends and doing certain things. He’s looking forward to the Day of the Dead when maybe someone will notice him.
12. Where Do Diggers Trick Or Treat?
This series of books is so cute for all toddlers, but especially little boys. Mine love it! It is written by Brianna Caplan Sayres and the illustrator is Christian Slade.
It is a board book that shows different cars, monster trucks, diggers and more on Halloween.
13. The Night Before Halloween
Natasha Wing wrote this fun spin-off of The Night Before Christmas. This is a fun Halloween book and story that our family reads every year on October 30th. It has monsters in it who are getting ready for a Halloween party and trick or treaters. All of The Night Before books are so cute and fun to read.
14. Room On The Broom
Room on the Broom was written by Julia Donaldson. It’s a cute story about a witch who gets help from some animals. It’s an affordable children’s book.
15. There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat
Lucille Colandro wrote this Halloween book about a little old lady who keeps swallowing crazy things.
